Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces growing in influence within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the premier party of heroes who will split off from the central cast to undertake their own adventure, distinct from the remaining groups.

This warrior group features Teor (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the agile character (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given 13 cast members, it was evident from the start that having everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

According to the DM, the warrior group is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where peaceful solutions are rare.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the events of episode 3 make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group knows exactly where to head next after a intense opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and swiping all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his obligations and ran away to a secure base in the remote area, beyond the city, with Cyd close behind.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each member has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, seeks retribution.
  • The adventurer has experience in Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • But, their position as important members in House Halovar could assist the group reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The grateful character vowed a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that control the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This means them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in quest for the traitor.

What’s Next?

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we discover that the warrior group will not appear the following episode, leaving the rest of the players to assemble the Explorers and Planners groups.

Fans can look forward to learning which players will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
