No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
