Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
